During measurements in dark media a part of the laser light is absorbed by the medium.

This leads to local increases in temperature and in turn alters the viscosity of the medium and therefore the mobility of the particles. The result indicates a smaller particle diameter than actually exists. The effects are similar to multiple scattering.
