Because particles use to be long and thin, a grinding of up to 6 cm long pieces has been possible. If some particles will clog the funnel (> 6 cm length), we recommend using the Model II {up to 9,5 cm long pieces}.

After a total of 15 minutes, the complete sample has been ground successfully. Majority of ground sample use to show a length up to 10 mm; only a few thin pieces have a max. length up to 15 mm.

Grinding chamber is free of residues; even higher amounts can be ground without problems.

For fine grinding, a planetary mill like Planetary Mill PULVERISETTE 5 classic line can be used for higher sample amounts (see result 2).

After 10 minutes of dry grinding, sample starts sticking lightly to bowl and grinding balls. This uses to happen after the majority of particles reached a fineness of < 20-30 µm. Interacting forces between fine ground particles will become bigger as their own g-force. Therefore, particles will stick to each other and become compressed by the used grinding balls. These clusters of particles also contain bigger particles which will not be ground any further.

It has shown that largest particles with up to 100 µm have been found.

To improve the grinding result, it is possible to separate fine ground sample (e.g. by sieving or sifting) and proceed grinding the coarse fraction until sticking occurs again.

Also a grinding in suspension is possible to achieve a better fineness.
